Phase Two: Choice

On any given day, we shift perspective according to the situation of the moment.

As an employee, we are under authority. As a parent, we are the authority.

If in a team with coworkers or collaborators, we are peers.

And then there are times when it's just me, myself, and I figuring life out.

In Phase Two of the 12 Phases™, the journey takes you inward, into the "back office" where the unsettling circumstances of Phase One are managed.

The 12 Phases™ system is systematic and sequential.

To secure a newly remodeled home base for your priorities in Phase 3, the Phase 1 mess has to be sorted.

This requires the shedding of transitory things like emotion and unusual circumstances so that the qualities with potential can be acquired.

Your conscious reasoning isn't quite up to the job...

One year, while struggling to find my footing as a single parent with no income,

my doctor recommended I see a counselor.

I truly could not see why I needed one but it was free, and it seemed rude to refuse.

It was the very first time I told a perfect stranger anything about my life.

Since I didn't really present a problem for the counselor to address,

and I wasn't in an emotional state of any kind,

the counselor tried a few approaches until she finally landed on a starting point...

She pulled out a notepad and asked me to name my priorities.

I was stumped.

Making decisions by goals, etc., was not possible at that time.

I had escaped a somewhat critical position in a third-world country

because my ex had all control over the money and had sold my plane ticket to get back home.

We had lived there for a full year.

The counselor pressed me for my list, holding pen to paper,

and waited...

The only thing that helped me was to reflect on my previous life.

In the relative calm of ordinary life, I had initiated several projects of my own design, mostly for businesses or groups.

I had to ask myself, How exactly did I do all that?

What's the very first thing on your list, the counselor asked.

And then it came to me, but I debated.

Is this what she's looking for?

It didn't have any substance that someone else would appreciate.

So I said that, out loud.

It doesn't matter what it is, she said, just so you know it's a priority for you.

What's the first thing you do?

I answered, "I follow my heart."

To my surprise, the counselor did not question it. She wrote that down as number one.

And then, without hesitation, she went forward, What's the second thing?

Now the dam broke, and my priorities tumbled out, one after another.

When I left that room, I had a list that spoke a future to me.

Over time, I learned that intuition is organic and felt, not thought.

The counselor's prompts told me where to look.

She could not know what I would find.

Your intuition leads you toward what is best only for you, in a way that harmonizes with your nature.

From that small beginning, I gave myself permission to value my heart's mind, no matter how little affirmation I got, otherwise.

There is an agenda in the heart that can be trusted, even if not understood.

Heart satisfaction is also felt, not defined by the mind. It is the unanticipated realization of a truth that fulfills you in a distinct way.

Your way to fulfillment is built with fragments of good, chosen from various and often unrelated experiences, and only what appears beneficial to your organism.

Challenge your imagination

As I describe what happens in Phase Two of the 12 Phases™, you must imagine two "selves."

One is watching the other sort through the Phase 1 experience very robotically, without regard to your emotions of the moment.

Your robot self can ignore the pain because it is on a mission to keep you upright and moving forward.

"Moving forward" is a matter of individual development so that the distinct attributes you were born with are engaged.

Unlike evolutionary natural selection over hundreds of thousands of years, imagine time is compressed when your organism makes selections.

A metamorphosis can happen in a few seconds, hours, or days, with new features added that improve your ability to thrive.

You adapt wholly: physically, mentally, and emotionally.

You will come out of life's curveballs as a matter of survival, being more capable and wiser, perfectly suited for your life.

What Phase 2 feels like

In Phase 2 of the 12 Phases™, we are sensitive to harm, having been blindsided in the unexpected impact of Phase 1.

But your intuitive evaluator is biased in your favor; your existing priorities automatically judge what you said or did in the heat of the moment.

You might feel embarrassed by bursts of emotion, and so, hasten to recover composure.

Maybe the unexpected was a happy occasion where you met someone who ignited the chemistry of attraction. Feeling vulnerable, you might temper your enthusiasm and look for qualities you value more in relationships.

There can be no growth without adversity, and it seems we become so distracted by circumstances, we don't detect the tiny seed of good hidden inside.

It's like sex; in the performance of sex, the couple will not know it if conception occurs, but when the egg is fertilized, that seed will grow.*

Phase 1 is the unfelt occasion of fertilization. What we feel in Phase 2 is a realization that the disruption is not a momentary or temporary thing.

As the realization deepens, your priorities encompass the disruption, and personal growth is the process of incorporating what sustains and matures your person, as Nature intended.

Feelings are physical sensations more like symptoms that tell you what condition your body or mind is in.

A woman feels changes in her body that she may interpret as pregnancy but wants verification.

Grief is pain in the mind that often wrenches the gut. When you continue to experience the pain in body and mind, emotions don't always immediately come forward.

For example, I have observed that a child might say their stomach hurts when there seems to be no cause, but when parents separate, pain can be attributed to grief and heartache stirred by the situation.

Biology prevails over psychology

If you were to try to decide intellectually how you could benefit from a crisis, it would be an exercise in futility.

As it is, your unconscious wisdom immediately sets to the work of setting things right again.

My intention in explaining the phases is to emphasize the fact that Nature takes care of much of your survival.

Autonomic responses of body and mind - your organism - are not distracted by all that you experience in the material world, nor is it swayed by your emotions.

The selection process is not a matter of worldly preferences. Our organism makes decisions like an expert construction contractor managing a remodel of your house.

There is a history of how you succeeded in previous crises, even during childhood, that sets the foundation for ongoing change and growth.

These are good, solid "bones" that can withstand demolition and remodeling, and present an opportunity to make improvements.

Admittedly, objectivity can feel a bit cold, but the advantage of objectivity about your subjectivity is what the 12 Phases™ allows.

Change does not automatically benefit the mind, which needs reflection to find meaning.

Change is part of life, and Nature has prepared us for it - and it is done naturally, by Nature's way, not by a "can do" attitude.

Phase 2 is the autonomic (biological) process of choice (selection) to protect, preserve, and expand your autonomous motivation. the source of personal drive.

Autonomy is required in the development of the inborn features that make you a distinct and inimitable individual.

I briefly touched on the similarity between immediate selection and evolutionary selection.

There will be more on this subject in future posts to separate the principle of selection from theories about evolution of species.

The scientific validity of the 12 Phases™ will begin to gain ground if I can show how the sequence of phases bears the marks of a living system.

Phase 2 is a critical point in supporting that claim, even if I do not yet have a research protocol in place.

Imagine your newborn self as you are expelled from the only world you have known into a totally foreign world.

Your responses as a baby and as a small child are intuitive - not based on reasoning and deduction.

The operation of intuition in a crisis is not order made out of haphazard circumstance, nor can the conscious mind contrive a sure-fire plan for the future ...

While the parents manage baby’s care, baby’s pure response from a natural disposition is specific and autonomous, through baby's body and developing mind.

Selection is autonomous activity; it only benefits you in the distinct way of your nature.

This is not something you can accomplish with conscious intention, as if you could read a plan in your DNA and execute it step by step.

But it seems that very thing is what your organism is actually doing.

The fact that it seems familiar shows that we learn how to survive by remembering what we did on impulse. Impulse is not planned.

The unexpected turns in your life play a larger part in your long-term development than planning and achieving in the short term.

The life you are aware of - the one lived by conscious intention - is made possible as you live in sync with your organism.

Selection is definitely carried out by your organism, merely choosing what helps you be more successfully you, from the inside out.

With my counselor, I learned what my organism had been choosing for me, each time making me stronger and more capable.

Organs are naturally compatible, though different.

Consider how the mechanism of body and mind operates independently**, without any outside interference, just as each of your organs do.

If your organs are functioning normally, you are well. When you are sick, you do things to return to wellness.

In the same way, you assume the reliability of your body/mind organism as it makes sure you recover from disruption and move on.

Knowing something about how your organism keeps you well is a deeper understanding of how body and mind function as one.

The 12 Phases™ system defines the natural phenomenon in terms of our lived experience so that we can see meaning in the wake of daily activity.

Meaning makes living worthwhile, and meaning is deeply personal and largely undefined outside of personal experience.

We can learn from unplanned successes the same way a football team does: Unplanned moves that end in unexpected successes can be incorporated into future strategies.

Mapping significant life events by the 12 Phases™ can show how your natural strengths come forward in unexpected situations.

In Phase Three, we discuss how priorities enable you to find a place to operate autonomously among others.
